Fire and Water Can Mix: The Use of Prescribed Fire as an Environmental Tool

Wildfires present a challenge to citizens, rescue personnel and firefighters each year. With decreased rainfall and drought associated with climate change, this problem has only worsened. Prevention of naturally occurring fires started by lightning has increased fuel in natural forests. Fires in these areas are often catastrophic because of human habitation at the wilderness/urban interface (WUI). Prescribed burns are an accepted alternative to uncontrolled wildfires. This lecture will provide an overview of the science of prescribed burning. It will help dispel the fear of fire as a useful forest management tool.
